Music Halls

  • G H Elliot – white singers/dancers dressed up as a ‘Minstrel’ by wear black makeup.

  • Performers would have been middle aged, nowadays are younger

  • Women were the main part on stages of British music hall

  • Vesta Tilley would dress and act as a man to enable her to perform her comedy and singing act.

  • Jazz clubs used black artists but they were not allowed to use the same entrances or facilities as their white colleagues.

  • Wild exotic animals would be used on stage

 

Silent films

  • Stanford White Murder – confirmed that a girl working in theater or movies was the object of desire of men in an unwholesome way – not want a young girl to be.

  • Female actress was usually attractive ‘good’ character with the male being the baddy = women more popular by public

 

 

Golden age of Hollywood

1930 to 1960

  • Great time for films and producing some iconic actors – still view roles for black actors other than servants Sydney poitier

  • Women were still portrayed as wives and girlfriends, usually vulnerable and very rarely ‘the lead’

  • There were characters written with physical disabilities, but any chacacters written with physical disabilities – but the character would have been played by an able body

  • Best actress Oscar 1948 

  • Loretta young – the farmers daughter. A comedy of her success

 

 

Tv

  • Nan winton tried as newsreader 1960 but soon axed – serious stuff not suitable for woman -She felt discrimated against

  • 1976, USA, first woman newreader Barbara Walters

  • 1960’s 70’s programmes were racist and sexist

  • Comedians regularly made offending jokes

  • prime time tv – bernald manning – offensive 

  • Love thy neighbor (1970) – more racist than the comedian

 

 

Fashion and editorial

  • new york – supermodel Iman  joined Naomi Campbell and veteran modeling agent Bethann Hardison for an unusual effort they are calling balance diversity

  • Naomi Campbell first black model to appear on the front cover of British vogue as late as 1987

  • Size 0 – normal women are not represented on runways

 

 

Commercials

  • Manufacturers use actors to sell their products

  • Very few companies use black actos, Asian actors

 

 

Hollywood today

  • Women have more roles and now take the lead

  • Actors of many ethnic origins now regularly appear alongside one another

  • Men can play the romantic lead until they are quite elderly – Michael Douglas. Women do not have the same opportunity there are more roles for older actresses but there are a select few

 

 

Unnacceptable stereotypes

  • Hero is white villain is black.

  • Women is housewives and secretaries, the man is ceo or boss.

  • Homeless people are criminals, drug dealers and uneducated.

  • Gay men are camp and effeminate.

  • However most recently the teacher and respectable citizen is a drug dealer in ‘breaking bad’

Here shows the black and white minstrels, there makeup is very dramatic and aim to appear as black skin in a comical way. They also have afro styled hair and wigs.
