CGI and Digital Technologies in Performance Contexts

Digital Technology

 - The implications for actors, costume and make-up designers

Gait Analysis – When a computer records motion produced by people. Used for medical such as analysing the movement of legs using infer-red transmitters and cameras filming from all angles.

Sports analysis – When suit is attached to a body and the movements are recorded, has been used to analyse golf swings.

Adapted technology to create characters

Examples of this technology within film:

3D vector graphics in Starwars

CGI – Tron 1892

CGI character – Sherlock 1985

CGI realistic character – Jurassic Park

AG Characters – Lord of the Rings

Who does it effect?

  • Makeup

  • Costume

  • Acting

  • Creature design

  • Set Building

  • Props

Digital Make-up and costume

MoCap and PerCap follows model/actors movement

Example: Harry Potter, Voldemort – Make-up applied to actor, then gets filmed, then nose      digitally gets removed

Green Lantern – Full CGI costume even mask added after filmed as wanted to have a light weight look and make it work as veins and human structure/skin

Tools of trade/advances in technology

  • Photoshop

  • Maya

  • SoftImage

  • Mudbox

  • Zbrush (digital sculpting)

Here shows a model that has makeup projected onto his face, it fits, curves and forms exactly to him. Anything can be applied and therefore could replace makeup needing to be applied. This would save the models time and will make sure continuity is correct. However the model does not move his face so is not yet practical to use within the industry but with development it could be soon.

Photoshop

The two clips above shows the power of photoshop and how anything can be changed. It enhances the work of a makeup artist and in a sense creates a fictional character as replaces everything about the models. Unfortunately photoshop is widely used within the media and gives us misleading judgement on the outcome of products and also puts images of how we should want to look when in reality its not real.

Photoshop can be very helpful when creating portfolio work as it can change the small mistakes that were not seen during makeup application. Although it can be misleading and show perfect work that actually was not created in real life, so its important to always include before and after photographs to show the true work.

In this video everything apart from the ink splatter and the scene out of the window right at the end has been digitally created. Although all the things within the film could be purchased and filmed they have decided to create it all instead. It means that they can make it look and move exactly how they want not how it naturally would move, which is contradicting as there aim is to make it look realistic and natural so the audience thinks that it’s real. It shows that we are able to create anything and still make people believe it is real, this could have a huge impact on jobs for makeup artists.

Andy Serkis played Gollum in Lord of the Rings, he was also involved in the characters in Planet of the Apes, King Kong and Tintin.

Pirates of the Carribean, davie Jones – films actors then CGI over the top

Avatar – Filmed my multiple cameras to capture movement then CGI over the top, camera in the front of the face to record all muscle movement. Although this type of technology development soon gets outdated and starts to look more fake as everything moves on.
